How ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture All Relate to One Another

How ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture All Relate to One Another: "

Here it is: the one chart you’ll ever need to understand shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. It will help you to create better black and white photos, it helps to explain why your lenses are more important than your camera, how to get the most of them, etc. If you don’t understand any of this, take a look at our guide to terminology. Or…take it with you.

This chart will help you with the dark art of metering and shooting out in the field, like at pop culture events. Enjoy!

Editor’s Note: This isn’t our chart. It was sent into us by a reader. Thanks Andrew!

Panasonic GH2 vs hacked Panasonic GH1 (+GH2 vs GF1)

Panasonic GH2 vs hacked Panasonic GH1 (+GH2 vs GF1): "

M43photo.blogspot compared the GH2 vs GH1 video quality: “First of all, it is easy to conclude that the colour balance is different. I have the same saturation settings in both cameras (+1), and the lightning was the same. So the difference must be due to different implementation of auto white balance. Overall, I feel that the GH2 colours look more natural. When it comes to the sharpness, I think the conclusion is that the GH2 has better image quality. Even though the bandwidth is a bit smaller than in the hacked GH1.

That’s the second comparison test I see and it looks like the 24Mbit AVCHD codec does an impressive job. Reminder, the new GH1 cameras that are for sale in stores are not hackeable because they feature the newest firmware which has not been hacked yet! But if you are still interested in getting the cheaper hackeable GH1 there are few of them for sale on eBay (Click here).

Travis sent me the following text to explain the GH2 vs GF1 comparison:

So I had a chance to film a competition this weekend with my GH2. I had filmed the exact same competition last year with my GF1 and the 20mm in true manual focus mode.

GH2 Rise Up comp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ahT2JHsYZo

GF1 Rise Up comp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5ePxmdu0k8

This year I felt lazy and stuck it in continuous autofocus for most of the comp and single point auto focus for a few shots where the focus didn’t need to change. There are a few spots where you can see the focus change but not too bad for indoors in horrible lighting.

The biggest advantage to the GH2 is the teleconversion feature. Last year I had to use the 2x digital zoom when I wanted to film with the 20mm pancake. This year I just shot in 1080p with the 2.6x converter on. It gives me extremely detailed 1080p video as if I was using a 52mm lens. The two links below point to similar samples. The first link uses the 2x digital zoom and the second on shows the 2.6x lossless teleconversion. The difference is pretty amazing and both were filmed with the same lens in the same location.

GF1 2x Digital Zoom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5ePxmdu0k8&t=0m50s

GH2 teleconversion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ahT2JHsYZo&t=1m36s

The first two clips at the link below were shot at a fixed ISO 3200 with the 45-200mm indoors. I never thought that would be possible until the GH2 came around: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ahT2JHsYZo&t=3m55s

I did have some trouble with the camera turning off periodically because it couldn’t recognize the battery. That made me very mad but I have two spare batteries being delivered that should resolve the issue.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with the GH2. And now that I have the
14mm F2.5 lens I really don’t think I need anything more.”

And here short in Stock status update:

For US: The GH2 is in Stock at Amazon or eBay.

For Europe: The GH2 is in Stock in almost every online or local stores: Amazon DE, Amazon UK, Amazon FR, Pixmania.fr, Pixmania.it, Pixmania.pl, Pixmania.es.

Which is the best compact mirrorless camera? Thom Hogan gives you the answer…

Which is the best compact mirrorless camera? Thom Hogan gives you the answer…: "

Thom Hogan posted a new “Mirrorless Shootout“. He tested four compact mirrorless cameras, the Olympus E-PL1, Panasonic GF1, Samsung NX100 and the Sony NEX-5.

The Panasonic and Samsung are the two serious photographer-friendly cameras in this bunch, while the Olympus has a little more compact gimmicky and the Sony is way over the top in changing the way you interact with a camera.

Thom also explains why you shouldn’t wait for Canon, Pentax and Nikon to enter the mirrorless battle: “At the moment, neither Nikon nor Canon have chosen to play in the mirrorless arena. Nikon is likely to be the next entrant, and I expect to see their model hit the shelves by about March 2011. Ditto Pentax. No word on Canon. Frankly, I think waiting for a maker to enter this market is probably a waste of time. Why? One word: lenses.”

Conclusion? “I can wholeheartedly recommend the Panasonic GF-1″ and there is a surprise: “I can’t really recommend the Sony NEX-5 directly“.

Apple iPad 2 to feature Retina Display, USB port?

Apple iPad 2 to feature Retina Display, USB port?: "

DigiTimes is hit or miss and while we’re inclined to think there are some misses in its latest report on Apple’s upcoming iPad 2, there are also some hits — or safe bets, at least. Citing an unconfirmed report in a Chinese newspaper, DigiTimes lists five key new features that Apple’s upcoming iPad sequel will supposedly tout:

•Retina Display

•Front-facing camera for FaceTime video chat

•A thinner glass panel for a lighter build

•A USB port

•A 3-axis gyroscope

Aside from the USB port, the paper’s claims sound reasonable. We’re not saying it’s impossible that Apple would add a standard USB port to the iPad, but we definitely give it a likelihood rating of 1 on a scale to 10 for the time being.

Acer comes out swinging; 7 and 10-inch Android tablets due in April 2011

Acer comes out swinging; 7 and 10-inch Android tablets due in April 2011: "

Today, at a planned media event, hardware manufacture Acer officially jumped into the Android tablet space by announcing two new future offerings. The company will offer both a 7 and 10.1-inch Android tablet that will begin shipping in April of 2011.

The 7-inch tablet boasts a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, HDMI output, a 1280 x 800 screen resolution, Flash 10.1 support, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, and an “HD” front-facing camera for video calling/chat.

The 10.1-inch model will have a 1GHz processor, along with a 5 megapixel camera, a 1280 x 800 screen resolution, an HDMI output, and Flash 10.1 support.

We’re still waiting for the company to let the official press releases fly. We’ll be sure to update this post with more details when that happens. Who’s excited?

UPDATE: The press release is after the bounce.

Live and interact in total mobility

Tablets according to Acer

New York, November 23rd 2010 – Acer enters the tablet arena with a very clear objective in mind: complete its range of products in support of its goal to simplify content consumption – a strategy which began with the development of Acer’s multimedia sharing system, Clear.fi.

Acer’s strategy is based on the concept of sharing multimedia content and enjoying it across any device, and Tablets are ideal devices for this purpose.

With close to 19 million tablets sold worldwide in 2010, 54.8 million units expected to be sold in 2011, and 208 million units forecasted for 2014, the market seems to confirm this idea.

Mobility, which has always been part of Acer’s DNA, finds a new form of expression in the range of tablets on offer, which feature various display sizes and models designed to fit different kinds of usage scenarios.

Weight and display size have a huge impact on the user experience. While devices with bigger screens are used to share and enjoy content, smaller devices are often used to create content – taking photos, recording videos or sending messages.

A 10.1″ Android tablet for a superb mobile and home entertainment experience

Sleek, smart and full of innovative features, the 10.1″ full capacitive touch screen tablet with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity ensures an optimal on-screen experience from every angle. Aluminum casing provides a cool look and feel, while its high gloss finish decorated with engraved patterns creates a subtle sophistication. And despite being just 13.3mm thick, it’s powerful enough to guarantee fun and productivity whether you need it .

Designed for HD entertainment, this tablet comes with a high resolution, high color contrast display, allowing you to play or share HD video with your friends wherever you are. Complete with a built-in HDMI port and 1080p capability, you can also use it to enjoy multimedia content in Full HD on your big screen TV.

But the best of all is that on this tablet you will be able to run and play premium HD arcade games and complex online 3D games, thanks to the 10 point multitouch and gyro meter control, that guarantees an entertainment experience on par with the best game consoles.

Available April 2011

7″ Android Tablet: the epitome of mobility

Don’t be fooled by its ultra-compact size: the 7″ tablet is fully featured and takes your mobile experience to the next level. On the 7″ (1280×800) 16:10 aspect ratio full touch screen, you can enjoy games, photos, videos while keeping up with your emails or your favourite social networks. Video chat or record a video with the front-facing HD camera. With HDMI support, hooking it up for a big screen video experience is easyier than ever!

The 7″ inch tablet will feature a dual core processor with Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support for the fastest HD Web experience and multimedia playback anywhere. And for a truly amazing sound experience, it will come with Dolby Mobile Technology. Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity allow fast and easy connection to available networks, while DLNA support makes sharing your multimedia on other devices easier than ever.

The FX-format Nikon D3S received a Best of What’s New Award from the Popular Science editors because of the camera’s ability to create images with low noise throughout the broad ISO sensitivity range from 200 to 12,800. The range is also expandable to an astounding ISO 102,400 to capture images in nearly any lighting conditions. “The D3S has significantly raised the bar for professional D-SLR cameras,” said Lisa Baxt, senior communications manager, Nikon Inc. “It has created new opportunities in low-light photography, while also delivering the highest image quality and high-speed performance that photographers have come to expect with Nikon D-SLR cameras.”

Every year, the editors of Popular Science review thousands of products in search of the top 100 tech innovations of the year as well as breakthrough products and technologies that represent a significant leap in their categories. All of the winners will be featured in the December issue of Popular Science, which is on newsstands now. The story is also available online at www.popsci.com/bown.

“Best of What’s New is more than a collection of new technologies and innovative products,” said Mark Jannot, editor in chief of Popular Science. “It’s a glimpse into the future, and gives us a sense of the way technology will continue to transform everything from our health and the environment to everyday life and even entertainment.”

Gentlemen, you may want to remove that laptop from your lap

Gentlemen, you may want to remove that laptop from your lap: "

Gentlemen, we are about to boldly go where BGR has never gone before. We are about to discuss that personal area between your belly button and knee caps, affectionately known as the: gonads, balls, dingle-berries, or nuts. Today, on our beloved technology blog, we’re talking testicles. Now, we know what you’re thinking: what? Hit the jump to hear us out.

Reuters is reporting that a study in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility states that men who use their laptop on, well, their laps, could be affecting their sperm quality. The study notes that placing the warm, portable, computer on-top of your man region causes the proverbial thermostat of your two, dangling friends to rise above its optimal setting.

“Millions and millions of men are using laptops now, especially those in the reproductive age range,” wrote Dr. Yefim Sheynkin, a urologist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. “Within 10 or 15 minutes their scrotal temperature is already above what we consider safe, but they don’t feel it.”

The doctor notes that repeated use could “contribute to reproductive problems,” but does write that using a laptop computer on your lap will not directly cause infertility.

The most comical line from the Reuters post is as follows:

The researchers hooked thermometers to the scrotums of 29 young men who were balancing a laptop on their knees.

Priceless. There you have it men. The next time you want to plop that notebook down on your lap, think twice, and remember… you could be microwaving your man-friends.

Photoshop expands to mobile devices

Photoshop expands to mobile devices: "

There have been few hints in the past about a potential Adobe Lightroom version for the iPad (see here and here). In their latest presentation, Adobe showed content-aware fill on an Android tablet and paint mixing on an iPad that can be wirelessly transferred to your computer:

adobe ipad color wireless transmission Photoshop expands to mobile devices

It seems that the direction Adobe is taking, is to use mobile devices as an additional tool to Photoshop instead of creating standalone mobile applications (they already have PS Express app). MacRumors showed some mockups on how those Photoshop tools may look on iPad and iPhone:
