Triggertrap Mobile App is Now Free for iOS and Android

Triggertrap Mobile App is Now Free for iOS and Android:
Triggertrap
The Triggertrap app that turns your iPhone, iPad or Android device into a remote trigger for your camera is now free. Previously, it was $4.99; however, it will be free at least through the holiday season. (Note that there is a limited-feature “free version” available, but this is the premium version that has now been made free.)
You need a $25 cable to make it work with your DSLR, but it does a whole lot more than a standard cable release remote for that price. I’ve used it with my Canon 5D Mark II and it works very well. Additionally, if you don’t get the dongle, some of the modes (like timelapse) will work with the iPhone’s built-in camera. So, it’s worth having for free anyway.
The Triggertrap apps is available for iOS on the iTunes App Store, and available for Android on the Google Play Store.
Below are some of the triggering methods you can use with Triggertrap.
  • Multiple Timelapse functions: Use Triggertrap as a basic intervalometer for timelapse capture, or get extra creative: Bulb Ramping Timelapse enables seamless sunrise/sunset timelapses, HDR timelapse lets you combine the power of HDR and timelapses, and finally, TimeWarp, a feature unique to Triggertrap, uses algorithms developed for animation to create more dynamic and natural-looking timelapses.
  • Sensor Controls: Leverages the smart device’s on-board sensors to release the shutter; Sound Sensor Mode uses the microphone to trigger at a set audio level, Seismic Mode fires based on vibrations, bumps or knocks, and Metal & Magnetism Sensor Mode can be used to fire the shutter in their presence
  • Facial recognition: Takes a photo once Triggertrap detects the programmed number of faces in the frame
  • Multiple HDR Capture Modes: Provides expanded control over bracketed exposures for Long Exposure HDR, or automates Long Exposure HDR Timelapse capture
  • DistanceLapse: Unique to Triggertrap, this mode relies on the smart device’s on-board GPS chip to fire the shutter over pre-determined distances
  • Motion detection mode: Triggers camera whenever motion is detected in the frame
  • Star trail mode: Allows external cameras to automatically take a series of long exposures in sequence to reduce noise
  • Wireless mode: Unique to Triggertrap, this new Wi-Fi triggering technology enables photographers to leverage the range and speed of a Wi-fi network to control the dynamic features of the Triggertrap Mobile app wirelessly

Sony RX1 review: first impressions

Sony RX1 review: first impressions:
Sony RX 1 review Sony RX1 review: first impressions
I have to admit, I am not a big fan of Sony cameras. I understand that the NEX-7 and RX100 are top performers in their categories, but for some reason they never "clicked" for me. My mirrorless/compact solution of choice for the past two years has been from Fuji (X100 first, then X-Pro1). I also rarely see a new camera that impresses me right from the announcement, since most of the companies recently just copy what the competition is doing (I guess Fuji and Leica are exceptions here). Since Sony is the new kid on the block, they have to play aggressive and they have delivered several innovations in the past few years, but they still had to convince me that they have something for me. I have been lusting for a compact full frame camera for a while - maybe since Leica released the M9 over three years ago. When the first RX1 rumors started floating around, I was immediately intrigued. Few days ago I received my RX1 and here are my first impressions and few sample images. Since there is still no RAW support for the RX1 (with the exception of the RAW converter provided by Sony, which I have not tried yet), all images in this post are taken directly from the camera (standard JPG mode; no post-processing; NR, lens distortion, shading and chromatic aberration all set to ON/AUTO. I will have a follow-up post with more details on the Zeiss Sonnar 2/35 lens and some ISO performance tests. Update: today Adobe released Lightroom 4.3 with RX1 support. Download links: Win | Mac.
Click on images for larger view, or just check the full resolution JPG files on flickr.

Since this is only a first impressions post, here they are:
  • The Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2 lens is superb and sharp even wide open at f/2.
  • High ISO performance of the RX1 is excellent. The ISO performance of Sony cameras is usually a stop worse then similar models from Nikon and Canon. This time, I think the low light performance of the RX1 is on par with the D600 (I will try to post some comparisons later).
  • Very hard on-off switch, probably the hardest camera switch I've seen to date. I like it - it is impossible to turn the camera by mistake.
  • There is no dedicated battery charger, you must charge the battery with an USB cable inside the camera.
  • The menu is clean, navigation is easy, the LCD screen is bright and shows sufficient details (1,229k dots)
  • Something I did not expect - focus peaking works only with MF magnification, you cannot get focus peaking on a regular view. Maybe I did not set it correctly. BTW, the manual is useless.
  • Since this is a very small and compact camera, you don't have direct access to most of the settings, but Sony has provided a quick access menu that I find very useful.
  • Battery life is not so great - I was able to get around 250 shots with my first charge.
  • The biggest bummer: slow AF in low light. I am pretty sure Sony will fix this with a firmware update, but why did they release the camera like that on the first place? They should know how to do this right by now.
  • Let me write a sentence about the lens cap: it's solid, heavy, looks like it's made out of metal - again, never seen something like that before.

The RX1 is expensive - at $2,798 you can definitely get a cheaper mirrorless camera, few lenses and have some money left for a weekend getaway. But don't you sometimes wish you don't have to make the choice on which lens to take, what bag to bring that will fit all of your gear? If you prefer simplicity, the RX1 is a pretty good choice - one camera, one focal length, full frame sensor and you just need a pocket to carry it.
Sony RX1 accessories Sony RX1 review: first impressions
I personally find the price of the RX1 accessories way worse than the price of the camera itself. The RX1 doesn't have an EVF or OVF - it's all sold separately at premium/insane prices - the EVF costs $450, the optical $600... even the lens hood is sold separately for $180! I personally would like to get the thumb grip, but for that price ($250), I will probably wait for third party solutions. After you add those few extras, the Rx1 will be more expensive than a Nikon D600 ($2000) and Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/2.0 ZF.2 lens ($1,117) combo that comes with a viewfinder, lens hood and LCD cover (ok, you will lose the AF).
With the Leica M9/M, the RX1 remains the only full frame digital compact camera available today. The RX1 is basically a very serious (or the best) point and shoot camera money can buy. The main advantages of the RX1 are the camera and sensor size ratio, with the Zeiss lens as an added bonus. The reason you may consider spending $2,798 on the RX1 is this: the camera will deliver the best image quality per ounce for a long time.
FYI: the Sony RX1 was in stock at B&H earlier today, which means there is currently no waiting list.

High ISO performance: NEX-5N vs E-M5 vs X-E1+ review

High ISO performance: NEX-5N vs E-M5 vs X-E1+ review:

How are the X-E1 High-ISO shots compared to those of the Sony NEX-5N and the E-M5? See the comparison pics at focus-numerique.com. (translated version). Remember, the E-M5 features a smaller m43 sensor.
And one more review:
grittymonkey (click here) tired the Sony NEX7, he tried the Olympus OMD E-M5 but he chose the “sexy-one“. First of all, because it looks great. “It smells like photography, It’s like it’s calling you to take it with you and go shoot something!” The dedicated dials, the ISO performance, the menu interface, the JPEG’s… but every camera has PROS and CONS. Fujirumors readers know: Adobe has no native X-Trans support, until now. The AF with the 35mm lens is not that fast. The EVF is great, but if the subject or you are moving fast, there is a little lag. But it’s still one of the best EVF’s. And the rear screen resolution could really be better.
His conclusions are: “If you are looking for a lightweight camera with outstanding image quality in all light conditions for still subjects, the Fuji X-E1 is exactly what you need.”

Real life performance comparison: Fuji X-E1 vs Olympus OMD EM-5

Real life performance comparison: Fuji X-E1 vs Olympus OMD EM-5:
lindsaydobsonphotography.com (click here) compared the Fuji X-E1 and the Olympus OMD EM-5. It’s a well made, comprehensive, real life review, with a lot of images and also a list of PROS and CONS of these cameras.
At the end, which camera would she choose? “That’s quite a difficult question, both are capable of producing outstanding images… In the room with the snake the Fuji really struggled to lock focus at times and the slight lag of the EVF added to my frustrations. However the OMD nailed the shots easily (despite having a cheap and slow zoom on at the time). And of course the OMD is not only faster but is also weather proofed which is a great bonus for me, amongst its other performance attributes. So whilst I greatly admire the XE1 for its outstanding images, classic looks and wonderful build quality, it’s rather like a luxury saloon car – pleasurable to handle providing you’re not in too much of a hurry. The OMD on the other hand is a bit like a highly specc’d modern sports car – a little sharper around the edges but your journey will be fast and fun.”
Read much more in her post here. And here is the second part of her review.
PS.: There are some price drops at AmazonUS on the Olympus (body only and kit). You can save $99. Click here to see the deal (kit). Save $50 purchasing this camera also through Adomara (click here-body only) or at B&H (click here-body only).

New M.Angeloni (riflessifotografici) review! X-E1 vs X-PRO1

New M.Angeloni (riflessifotografici) review! X-E1 vs X-PRO1:

Fujifilm X-E1 – Fujinon XR 35mm f/1.4 R – 4 sec, f/16, Iso 200
A few days ago I posted the review of the X-PRO1, X-100 and X-10 of riflessifotografici. I have to say that I liked them a lot. So this time I waited for the X-E1 review. And now it’s here, it’s online. (translated version)
Angeloni begins so: You want to know how the image quality of the X-E1 is? You wanna know about the RAW-conversion with adobe? The autofocus? Writing speed? Well, same as X-PRO1, so stop reading, and good bye!
So I continued to read! ;)
Massimiliano Angeloni tested the new X-E1 with the 35mm lens and the 18-55mm zoom lens. And regarding the 18-55 lens, don’t expect over-hasty conclusions, that’s not his style, as you know. He wants to go deep inside the qualities of this lens. Therefore we still have to wait for a study in greater depth of this lens. So be patient, read this (translated) review and wait for more.
Also here the main question is: X-E1 or X-PRO1? Is the smaller size really a PRO of this camera? The smaller size of the body required to rearrange for example the picture review button and the focus-assist light. No problem with the picture review button, but the new position of the focus-assist light isn’t the best. Of course it depends on how you hold your camera, but it’s quite easy to cover this important light with the middle finger of your right hand.
It’s not just a matter of size, of weight, EVF or OVF. It’s a different philosophy. The question is, what kind of photographer you are! So, there is no better or worse choice between X-PRO1 or X-E1. It depends on you. Do you need a compact package [with the future 27mm f2.8 pancake-type lens on Fuji's road-map] that takes advantage of the potential of the 16 MP X-Trans sensor? Do you need a flash, or the OVF? A small or a (maybe?) more solid camera? It’s up to you.
So, read the review and let’s wait for the 18-55mm review! I’ll keep you up to date.

Just choose two cameras and compare the sample images. I passed some time yesterday comparing the Sony NEX-7, Olympus OM-D E-M5, and many more with the X-E1… I got lost in comparison! So, if you want, try out the comparison tool at imaging-resource and have fun.

Very good JPEG quality, impressive dynamic range and noise performance, fast, sharp, excellent in-camera raw conversion, good handling, bright optical viewfinder… this are just some of the PROS that dpreview (click here) noted about this camera. Dpreview says that the “X10 offers much to like for those who are willing to sacrifice pocketability for external controls. As such, it easily earns our Silver award.” Read the Stuff.tv review here, according to them it’s the “best advanced compact around, and a retro-tastic joy to use.” The X-10 beats also the Olympus OM-D E-M5, Canon EOS 650D, and, yes, even the Sony NEX-7. Click here to the award 2012.
On ebay you find all the Fuji X-10 available here on slidoo (click here). Just choose your country to filter the results and find all the X-10 available in your country.
The X-10 is now to have at Amazon US with a $50 price drop, for $550 (click here to see the X-10 at AmazonUS).

X-E1 or X-PRO1: that is the question!

X-E1 or X-PRO1: that is the question!:

You surely remember the digitalliving review, one of the most discussed reviews on fujirumors. If you did not read it, click here to read.
The question was: X-PRO1 or X-E1? Digitalliving had a clear answer: “All in all, the X-E1 beats the X-Pro1 in every aspect, apart from the hybrid viewfinder. Cheaper, easier, and same image quality.” Also fixelpix was cought in this dilemma, as we wrote in this post here.
It’s one of the most asked questions in the reviews I’ve read. And the answers are different. And now, that the X-E1 is finally available also in the US market, is it really better to buy the X-E1 rather than the X-PRO1? Is it better to save the money, buy the X-E1, and buy an additional lens with the money you saved? Here are an autofocus comparison and four more reviews:
AF
In this video matthewemaddock compared the AF speed of X-E1 and X-PRO1. Seems to focus at the same speed, but, at least in this video, the focus is quite loud. (see the video here).
First review:
This time another German review makes the same question, but the answer is different (click here to read): The X-PRO1 beats the X-E1 in nearly every aspect, except two: 1) the external jack-connection 2) the electric remote release.
Combined with the new FUJINON XF18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS, the X-E1 is better for videos. But for those who set priorities in photography, the OVF is simply better than the EVF. The battery life of the X-PRO1 is also much better, if you use the OVF (but it’s a bit worse if you use EVF.)
Second review:
(derekclarkphotography review) X-E1 or X-PRO1? This review says that there are more similarities than differences between the X-E1 and the X-PRO1. But there are a few differences.
The X-E1 is easier. Maybe to easy? The X-PRO1 however feels quite nice in his hands. He says he will wait for the Gariz half case to be available for the X-E1, not only to protect the body, but to “add a bit of weight and make it a bit more comfortable in the hand.” I looked for all the Gariz half cases available for X-series worldwide on slidoo.com (see results here). There are also the first full cases of other brands available for the X-E1. See them all here!
The EVF of the X-E1 has a high resolution, the addition of the diopter is great.
He also says that “one thing I should point out is that although the shutter sound is as awesome as the X-Pro1, there is an extra noise as the shutter closes that sounds almost like a rapid wind on of film, very short, but I wasn’t sure if it should be there.” According to what Fuji UK told him, it’s the sound it should make.
And at the question, X-PRO1 or X-E1 he answers: “If I didn’t own any X cameras, I would buy the X-Pro1, but if you’re looking for something smaller, lighter, less expensive … then the X-E1 is the one to buy.
Third review:
photomadd.com: X-E1, X-PRO1 or X-100?I’d still go for the X-Pro1.  That’s coming from a position of using the X-Pro1 for the past 7 months though, I’ve got an attachment to it.  If I was starting over from scratch I might not think the X-Pro1 was worth the extra £400 (street price)... The saving over the X-Pro1 allows you to (just) buy an additional lens, and if you’re starting out that is likely to be more important than the body as it will give you more flexibility.” At the end he also says, that if he should choose between the X-E1 and X-100, he would go for the X-100. “There is something about it that isn’t replicated in either the X-Pro 1 or X-E1“. [also Ken Rockwell chose the X-100: "In case everyone forgot, the Fuji X100 is still... my favorite over the Fuji X-Pro1 and Sexy One (X-E1)."]
Fourth review
There is a Spanish review at dslrmagazine.com (translated version) that concentrates only on the comparison between X-E1 and X-PRO1. In short, there is a gap between the models. So they have a different target. But they say that the X-E1 is a complete camera.
Which one would you choose? Would you buy the X-PRO1 or the X-E1 (maybe with additional lens) ?

21 October, 2012 - Fuji X-E1 Review

21 October, 2012 - Fuji X-E1 Review:
Fuji continues on a roll with a new entry in its exciting X series of cameras, the X-E1 which Nick Devlin has been working with and testing for the past little while.
Nick's review is now online.

"You and Jeff did it again!  A great series of videos.
I've watched the earlier Camera to Print series as well as the LR 2 & 3 videos and as usual, I learned

new technique and ideas even though I've been behind a camera for 45 years.
Additionally, the rapport you two have is most engaging, enjoyable, and totally different than the sterile video tutorials from others (I'm afflicted with being a visual learner).
Again, a great series of videos that have helped me grow once again."

[ Review & Tests ] Crossover 27Q LED-P Pivot Edition & Gallery with Apple Cinema Display

Crossover 27Q LED-P Pivot Edition
Review + Gallery + Downloads

I've been hearing about 27" 2560 x 1440 monitors from Korea. These monitors have the same manufacturer brand LG as for Apple and Dell monitors. The well known Apple Cinema Display and Dell U2711. Myself I have the Apple Cinema Display for some time and always wanted to have a second screen at the same specification but it was too much to afford a second $1100 screen.

There are several brand from Korea: Yamakasi, Crossover, PCbank, Shimian, Davi, First Semiconductor & MOTV. There might be more...

I've chose the Crossover 27Q LED-P Pivot and I ordered from the seller Green-sum on eBay last week, it took them 2 days to confirm and ship out at their door and the actual DHL shipping was very efficient ship over the weekends at an incredible speed.

Crossover 27Q LED-P Specification:

588

The Package
So, I received my package on Monday afternoon and the condition of the box has no damages.

399

First Look
The monitor weigh about 7kg which is way lighter than my Apple Cinema Display (11kg) to my measurement. It's very light for a 27" and it is much easier to find VESA desk / wall mount without worrying about its weigh limitation.

399

Crossover Logo
I'm not too fond of the logo but as long the monitor quality is perfect, I'm all good.

399

The OSD Buttons
From left to right - Decrease Brightness, Increase Brightness & Power On/Off & Power LED. These buttons are located at the back and the RED LED indicated sleep or standby mode and the BLUE LED means actively running.

399

The Rear
The whole monitor including the front are made in metal there are no plastic except the stand. The frame is painted with black gloss and white gloss color.

399

Bottom Stand
Metal bottom house in plastic. Look & feel solid to me.

399

Swirl Left & Right
Both side max is about 40' degree you can turn.

399

399

Height Adjustment
Lowest is about 12.8cm from the desk to the bottom of the viewable display. Full extended height is about 21.2cm from the desk to the bottom of the viewable display. When I said viewable display means skip / not to count the frame. Just the viewable area where the bottom of the TFT is, so this give an idea for those with different monitor side by side.

399

Maximum Height
Full 90 degree tilt... well not exactly, I think it's about 86-87 degree tilt and I believe the mechanic in there has a tiny flaw.

Warning: Please make sure you tilt your monitor upward for room before rotating it vertically otherwise you will hit the bottom stand.

700

700

The Sticker
The model serial number is marked: 201207000079: I assume this is the year 2012, month 07 (July) and 79th produced model.

399

Connections
Top to bottom - Power connector & DVI-D input.

399

DVI-D
DVI-D Cable close up view. There are good nice quality cable unlike cheapest cable I've seen.

399

Power Brick
This power brick is huge as a house red brick. Heat wise is about 35-40'C when touched after running for hours. Nothing serious and it is about the same temp like laptop power brick temperature. This brick has the standard connector that I can switch easily without needing to buy an adapter.

399
399

Power Cable for Korea
No comment.

399

Ghetto US/CAN Power Cable from HP Desktop
So I dug up an old cable for my HP desktop PSU and it works perfectly but looks ugly. BUT it will be under my desk...

399
399

Crossover Side by Side with Apple
Oh... Apple is jealous here.

399
399

Bezel Thickness
Crossover (LEFT) & Apple (RIGHT) I actually love the bezel thickness from Crossover. It makes the TFT display looks a lot bigger than Apple.

399

Test: Brightness
This is the lowest brightness I can go on these two monitors; Apple has can go even lower and one more notch it just turn off the LED light.

283

This is the max brightness, both looks essentially same now.

299

Test: Light Bleed
Crossover has no light bleed but in this picture you see some odd color or some odd uneven pattern. Well most monitors are like this.

This is the Apple; it has a huge light bleed at the bottom right and left in which I am quite disappointed for paying this much. Crossover kills it.

Test: Reflectiveness
Crossover (LEFT) & Apple (RIGHT) has more reflectivity due to the tempered glass.

Test: Input Lag
Crossover is 6ms GtG and Apple one is 12ms GtG. The reason below both shows the exact same due it is not GtG test. I'll will retest this again later.

Crossover on the LEFT & Apple on the RIGHT.

Updates #1: Apparently, the input lag on Apple Cinema Display is better than the Crossover for a margin. And there are frame shuttering on the Crossover which I am not sure if it is my GPU or the Cable.

The following images are shot in high speed DSLR; it shows more ghosting on the Crossover vs Apple.

Updates #2: I had both monitors mirrored and ran Mass Effect 3 due it gives exceptional stable framerate to test. This was filmed on iPhone 4 and I pick out one of the frame with ghosting on. Here is the result; both monitor perform the same ghosting effect and secondly I prefer the Crossover due it has less reflective in dark area of the game.

Test: On & Off Delay
This is a really a short video to test the power on and off delay time between Crossover (LEFT) and Apple (RIGHT).

Conclusion
Crossover 27Q Pivot is a $350-$400 (July 2012) range monitor and Apple/Dell are $999 mark. To pay $999 price tag doesn't mean you can get a perfect monitor. Even through they said guarantee no dead pixel from Apple and Dell. There are still issue with light bleed. Apple and Dell monitors are calibrated but you can do it yourself as well with Catleap and Crossover.

I managed to tweak my Crossover to the same profile as my Apple. Just take 10-20min to calibrate. If you know how.

In this review, my Crossover has 1 dead pixel and 3 stuck but those stuck can be fixed and I am not picky about the dead pixel unless it is very visible.

This is a 1440p monitor at a 110 PPI. 1 dead pixel in 110 PPI screen is barely visible unless you put your head 20-30cm to the screen.

These 27" monitors are meant to view at 60cm or 2 feet.

I'll say these monitors worth at its price and not more. If you're lucky to get a near perfect one but from the result it is about 85%+ to get a good one vs a DOA or many dead pixel.

Suitable for photo / video / graphic editing? Yes, due you can calibrate the monitor by yourself.
